ITIN Expiration Checker

Exception for information returns
ITINs used only on information returns (such as Form 1099) do not need to be renewed and may continue to be used on information returns after expiring for tax-return purposes.
This calculator implements the IRS 3-year non-use rule for ITIN expiration. It is not tax advice, does not account for every exception, and should not be relied on to determine your filing position. Consult a qualified tax professional or the IRS directly. All input stays in your browser — nothing is transmitted.
About this tool
About ITIN Expiration Checker
An ITIN (Individual Taxpayer Identification Number) issued by the IRS expires if it isn't used on a US federal tax return for three consecutive tax years. Per the IRS: "If an ITIN isn't used on a U.S. federal tax return for any 3 consecutive tax years, it expires on December 31 after the third tax year of non-use." This tool takes the last tax year your ITIN was used and calculates the exact expiration date.
Given the last tax year an ITIN appeared on a federal return, the calculator adds three years and sets the expiration to December 31 of that year. It then compares that date to today to report whether the ITIN is expired, expiring this year, or still valid, and how many years remain.
Use this before filing a US tax return with an ITIN that hasn't been used in a while, when preparing to renew an ITIN via Form W-7, or when advising a client or family member on whether their ITIN needs to be renewed before the next filing season.
Instant, fully client-side calculation — no data ever leaves your browser. This tool implements the day-count rule precisely; for the exception covering ITINs used only on information returns, and for anything affecting your actual filing position, consult a qualified tax professional or the IRS.

FAQ
ITIN Expiration Checker — Frequently Asked Questions
When does an ITIN expire?
An ITIN expires if it isn't used on a US federal tax return for any 3 consecutive tax years. It expires on December 31 after the third tax year of non-use. For example, an ITIN last used on a 2023 tax return would go unused for 2024, 2025, and 2026, and expire on December 31, 2026.
What happens if my ITIN has expired?
An expired ITIN can still be used on a tax return, but it must be renewed. The IRS will process the return but may delay any refund and disallow certain tax credits until the ITIN is renewed. You renew by submitting a new Form W-7 with the required identification documents.
Do I need to renew my ITIN if I only use it for information returns like a 1099?
No. ITINs used only for information reporting purposes — for example, being listed on a Form 1099 you receive — do not need to be renewed under this exception, and may continue to be used for that purpose after expiring for tax-return purposes.
Does this tool check the historical middle-digit expiration schedule?
No. Between 2016 and 2020, the IRS ran a separate, one-time expiration schedule based on the middle digits of older ITINs (70–88, then 90–99 for ITINs assigned before 2013). That schedule has fully lapsed — every ITIN affected by it expired years ago. This tool only implements the current, ongoing 3-year non-use rule, which applies to all ITINs going forward.
Tips
- The relevant year is the tax year the return covered, not the calendar year you filed it in
- If you're not sure when your ITIN was last used, check your most recent US tax return or transcript
- Renewal requires Form W-7 plus original or certified identification documents
- This tool never transmits your data — the whole calculation runs in your browser
