Not legal or immigration advice

Entry requirements change without notice, vary by nationality and visa type, and are ultimately enforced by airlines and border officials, not by this tool. This is a curated starting point covering commonly searched destinations — always confirm current requirements with the destination's official government travel-advisory page, your airline, or the nearest consulate before booking or travelling.

About this tool

About Passport Validity Checker

Many countries deny boarding or entry if a traveller's passport doesn't have enough validity left — the well-known "6-month rule" being the most common version, alongside the Schengen Area's own 3-month rule and a smaller group of countries that only require the passport to outlast the trip itself. This tool holds a curated table of 115+ destinations, each tagged with which of those four rule shapes applies, and computes the exact date your passport needs to remain valid through for your specific trip.

Enter your passport's expiry date, your trip's start and end dates, and pick a destination. The tool looks up that destination's rule, computes the required valid-through date from either your entry date, your planned departure date, or the departure date plus a 3- or 6-month buffer as applicable, and compares it against your passport's expiry. If your passport falls short, it shows the exact shortfall and the date by which you'd need to renew — practically, before your trip starts.

Use this before booking international flights, when your passport is getting close to expiry and you're planning travel, when double-checking an airline or embassy's stated requirement, or right alongside the Schengen 90/180 calculator and passport generator on this site when planning a multi-country trip.

Instant, fully client-side calculation — no data ever leaves your browser. Every destination row shows the date it was last reviewed so you can judge how fresh the information is, and the tool is explicit that it is not legal or immigration advice — entry rules are set and enforced by each destination's government and by airlines, not by this calculator.

FAQ

Passport Validity Checker — Frequently Asked Questions

Is this legal or immigration advice?

No. This tool is a starting point based on a curated table of commonly searched destinations, not an authoritative or exhaustive legal source. Entry requirements change without notice, vary by nationality and visa type, and are ultimately decided by each destination's government and enforced by airlines and border officials. Always confirm current requirements with the destination's official government travel-advisory page, your airline, or the nearest consulate before booking or travelling.

What's the difference between the "6 months beyond entry" and "6 months beyond departure" rules?

"6 months beyond entry" anchors the requirement to the day you arrive — your passport must still be valid 6 months after that fixed date, regardless of how long your trip is. "6 months beyond departure" anchors it to your planned departure date instead, so the requirement grows with the length of your trip. Most of the countries commonly described as having "the 6-month rule" use the entry-anchored version; a smaller number, including Vietnam, anchor it to departure instead.

Why does the Schengen Area use a 3-month rule instead of 6 months?

The Schengen Area's own short-stay rule, under the Schengen Borders Code, requires non-EU/EEA passports to remain valid for at least 3 months beyond the planned departure date from the Schengen Area — a separate and less strict rule than the classic 6-month rule used elsewhere. All ~29 Schengen member states apply this same rule uniformly.

My destination only requires validity for the duration of my stay — do I still need extra buffer?

Not legally, but it's still worth a margin of safety. Countries like the UK, Canada, Australia, Japan, Mexico, Brazil, and several others in this tool's table officially only require your passport to remain valid through your trip. In practice, though, some airline check-in staff mistakenly apply a 6-month rule anyway, so a little extra buffer can avoid a stressful conversation at the gate even when it isn't strictly required.

What does the "renew by" date actually mean?

It's your trip's start date. Passport validity is checked at check-in, boarding, and border entry — all of which happen on or before your trip starts — so if your passport doesn't meet the destination's rule, you need a renewed passport in hand before that date, not just before the rule's underlying deadline.

My destination isn't in the list — what should I do?

This table covers roughly 115 commonly searched destinations, not every country in the world. If yours isn't listed, check that destination's official government travel-advisory page directly, or ask your airline — the same four rule shapes covered here (6 months from entry, 6 months from departure, 3 months from departure, or duration-of-stay-only) cover the vast majority of countries even if this specific tool doesn't have that row yet.

Tips

  • Check the destination's `lastReviewed` date shown in your result — the older it is, the more worth double-checking against an official source
  • If you're close to a boundary, err on the side of renewing early — airlines apply these rules at check-in, before you ever reach the border
  • Many countries also require blank passport pages in addition to a validity window — check that separately
  • This tool never transmits your data — the whole calculation runs in your browser
