About this tool
About Brazilian Inscrição Estadual Validator
This validator checks whether a Brazilian Inscrição Estadual (state tax registration) number is structurally valid for the state you select, recomputing that state's own official check digit(s) and comparing them against the number you entered.
Choose the state, paste the IE (with or without punctuation), and the validator strips formatting, checks the expected digit length, and recomputes the check digit(s) using that state's specific algorithm — reporting a clear pass or fail.
Use this to verify a company's IE collected from a form before submitting it to a Brazilian invoicing or tax system, to debug why a number is being rejected, or to confirm generated test data is structurally correct for a given state.
Instant, fully client-side validation with no data ever leaving your browser. Note this checks structural validity only — it does not confirm the number is actually registered with that state's Secretaria da Fazenda (SEFAZ).

FAQ
Brazilian Inscrição Estadual Validator — Frequently Asked Questions
What does this validator actually check?
For the state you select, it checks that the number has the expected digit count and recomputes that state's official check digit(s) from the base digits, comparing them against what you entered. Both checks must pass for the number to be marked valid.
Does this check the SEFAZ database?
No. This tool performs structural and check-digit validation entirely in your browser. To confirm an IE is actually registered and active, you would need to query that state's official SEFAZ lookup service.
Why do I need to select a state before validating?
Every state uses a different check-digit algorithm and digit count, so the same 10-digit number could be a valid IE in one state's scheme and invalid in another's. Selecting the correct state ensures the right algorithm is applied.
Can I paste an IE with dots or dashes?
Yes. The validator strips all non-digit characters automatically, so formats like '113.220.481.118' or '12.345.663' validate the same as their unformatted digit strings.
Tips
- If validation fails, double-check you selected the state that actually issued the number
- A wrong digit count is the most common error — each state expects a specific length
- Cross-check against the CNPJ Validator when verifying a full company registration
- Use the Inscrição Estadual Generator to see a correctly formed example for comparison
